ABS resin is butadiene, styrene, acrylonitrile as raw materials. Polybutadiene rubber latex was prepared by emulsion polymerization, and the latex was graft copolymerized with styrene and acrylonitrile to obtain ABS powder. AS (SAN) milk was prepared by suspension polymerization. Then the ABS powder, SAN milk and various additives were blended according to a certain ratio, and the ABS resin product was finally obtained through extrusion granulation.

ABS has two main methods of industrial production:

The acrylonitrile-styrene copolymer (AS) and the polybutadiene (B) are mixed, or the two latexes are mixed and then copolymerized; the acrylonitrile and styrene monomer are added to the polybutadiene latex for grafting Copolymerization. The raw material and energy needed to produce 1 kg of ABS resin is equivalent to about 2 kg of oil. Chi Mei Industrial is the world's largest manufacturer of ABS resin. Its factories in Tainan and Zhenjiang produce approximately 1.3 million tons of ABS resin annually. Other major ABS resin manufacturers include: Bayer Chemicals, LG Chemicals, GE Plastics, BASF and Dow Chemicals.

Product performance

The appearance of ABS resin is slightly yellow and opaque with a relative density of 1.04. It has good dimensional stability, outstanding impact resistance, heat resistance, dielectric properties, abrasion resistance, surface gloss, easy coating and coloring. Acrylonitrile makes ABS have good chemical stability and surface hardness. Butadiene gives ABS the toughness and impact resistance of rubber body. Styrene makes ABS have good processing fluidity, colorability and electroplatability.
