Romantic Christmas is approaching, online shopping presents popular in colleges and universities
As the end of the semester approaches and Christmas draws near, university students are caught between financial limitations and the desire to celebrate the holiday in style. This tension has led many to turn to online shopping, a convenient and cost-effective solution that’s quickly becoming their go-to choice for holiday purchases.
On the afternoon of the 7th, at Jilin Agricultural University, a group of female students were seen gathered indoors, surrounded by stacks of packages that looked like small hills. Dozens of students were actively searching online, excitedly browsing through options for gifts. Yang Nan, one of the students, shared her thoughts: “It’s almost Christmas, and I want to get a sweater for my boyfriend. The prices in physical stores are too high, but I can find great deals online.â€
The author observed that most of these packages were, in fact, Christmas gifts purchased online. Yang explained that with the holiday season approaching, many students are thinking about what to give their friends and loved ones. However, with tight budgets and rising prices, traditional shopping isn’t always feasible. “After checking out the stores, I found that even my favorite gifts cost over $100. Asking my parents for money feels uncomfortable, and I don’t want to feel left out during the holidays,†she said. To cope, she cuts back on other expenses and shops online for more affordable options.
Many students share Yang’s approach. A growing trend is taking hold on campus — an online Christmas shopping craze. “Shopping online is mostly about saving money,†Yang emphasized. On the eve of Christmas, more students are skipping brick-and-mortar stores in favor of digital platforms. They plan ahead, set budgets, and then spend hours browsing and comparing products before making their purchases.
On the morning of the same day, the author checked Taobao and searched for “Christmas Tree.†The results were overwhelming — over 88,000 items listed for sale. One seller mentioned that while Christmas trees weren’t popular last year, this year they’re flying off the shelves. According to transaction records, a 1.8-meter-tall tree priced at ¥108 sold 114 units per month. As temperatures drop, warm clothing like sweaters and scarves have become a popular way to exchange holiday gifts, offering both comfort and affordability.
Christmas (Christmas) is a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, usually celebrated on December 25 every year. The origin of the festival goes back to 336 AD, when the Roman Church began to celebrate the birth of Jesus on December 25th. Although the exact date of the birth of Jesus is not specified in the Bible, most Christians celebrate Christmas on this day.12
Christmas was originally meant to commemorate the birth of Jesus, so it is also known as Christmas. This festival gradually became an important tradition of the church after the middle of the 5th century, and spread among the East and West churches. Due to the different calendars used by different denominations, the specific dates and forms of celebration also vary.
During Christmas, many Christian churches hold special services called "Mass" (Mass). On this day, people would go to the church for religious services, exchange gifts, and decorate their homes with Holly, mistletoe, and Christmas trees. Traditional customs such as the Christmas tree and Santa Claus also add a strong festive atmosphere in the festival.
The spread of Christmas is not limited to Europe, its customs also spread to Asia, especially in the middle of the 19th century, Japan, Korea and other countries were influenced by Christmas culture. Now, Christmas has become a public holiday in the Western world and in many other regions, where people celebrate it by exchanging gifts and holding banquets.
