At the Haishang Summit on October 23rd, the Secretary-General of Shanghai Fashion Week emphasized the importance of collective efforts in advancing the event’s growth. Hundreds of leading domestic media outlets gathered at the Shanghai International Fashion Industry Center to attend the final event of Shanghai Fashion Week. During the summit, he met with Mr. Shi Shiping, Deputy Director and Secretary-General of the Shanghai Fashion Week Organizing Committee, to discuss the development of the event and the vision for Shanghai becoming a global fashion capital.
Over the past eight years, Shanghai Fashion Week has undergone significant transformations. Initially, the event was held primarily at Fuxing Park, with only five or six brands participating. The seasonal releases were not aligned with international standards. However, in 2007, Shanghai successfully integrated into the global fashion calendar, launching trend presentations in both the first and second quarters of the year. The participation of industry stakeholders has also grown significantly. This year alone, over 30 brands, 40 designers, and 100 media representatives took part, marking a major evolution in both scale and quality.
Another notable change is the city's enhanced image and functionality. With the World Expo as a catalyst, international organizations such as the United Nations’ South-South Cooperation Organization and the World Fashion Organization have joined the event, signaling its growing global influence.
When the Haishang Summit was first held in 2008, organizers invited representatives from Paris and London Fashion Weeks to share insights on operations and future directions. At that time, many believed Shanghai Fashion Week was still immature compared to its long-established counterparts. However, international experts praised the progress made, and today, Shanghai has become one of the six major fashion weeks globally. The goal is to eventually compete with Tokyo in the future.
The collaboration between fashion week and media was driven by the recognition that media plays a crucial role in amplifying the event’s reach. Traditional and digital media can exponentially increase visibility, making it impossible to achieve wide influence without their support. At the same time, the aim is to make fashion week more inclusive, ensuring it is not just an exclusive event for a few. This synergy between media and fashion week creates a mutually beneficial relationship, where media helps drive the fashion industry forward.
In the post-World Expo era, Shanghai aims to leverage its own strengths to build itself into a fashion capital. The focus on high-tech industries and creative cultural sectors aligns with the city’s long-term development strategy. As a key part of the creative economy, the fashion industry is gaining more attention. With urbanization accelerating, demand for textiles and apparel will grow rapidly, providing a solid foundation for the sector.
Additionally, China’s per capita GDP has reached $5,000 this year, while Shanghai has surpassed $10,000, with per capita consumption exceeding $3,000. This economic growth fosters a more internationalized mindset among residents, driving evolving fashion trends and consumer preferences. Fashion Week serves as a platform to showcase China’s emerging talent and promote the industry forward.
The partnership between the Shanghai Garment Industry Association (SGTA) and the World Fashion Organization (WFO) marks a new chapter for Shanghai Fashion Week. Through this collaboration, SGTA hopes to elevate its brands, designers, models, and business networks, while strengthening ties with global fashion weeks and other cities. This will help Shanghai integrate faster into the global fashion industry, foster a creative economy, and nurture top talent.
Moving forward, the “HaiShang Summit†will be held every two years with themes reflecting global fashion trends. It will invite influential figures from around the world to speak, and facilitate exchanges, collaborations, and business partnerships. These efforts are expected to inspire all those interested in the future of Shanghai Fashion Week.
