Are you looking to learn how to sew using a sewing machine, or do you know someone who is just starting out? This is the first part of a three-part series aimed at offering guidance to beginners who are eager to dive into sewing with Oliver + S patterns. Whether you're teaching yourself or helping someone else, these suggestions are perfect for adults, teens, tweens, or even younger children. These ideas focus on creating clothing items that young females might want to sew for themselves or that others might enjoy making for them.
In this series, we’ll be concentrating on beginner-level projects that only require one pair of scissors—perfect for those who have already attended their first sewing class or learned the basics through books or videos. For reference, “beginner†refers to individuals who are comfortable threading a sewing machine, sewing straight seams, and have completed a couple of small projects successfully.
Shall we start with some great Oliver + S patterns designed specifically for girls? Keep in mind that the order isn’t strictly rigid; it depends on the skill level of the sewer and the intended recipient.
First up is the **Lazy Days Skirt**. This charming elastic-waist skirt is an excellent choice for a teen, tween, or young girl who wants to sew her own first skirt. Recently, my daughter S tried her hand at making one for herself, and it turned out beautifully! The Lazy Days Skirt is available in a wide range of sizes, from small to large (I’ve even made one in a size 16). Since it’s a tutorial rather than a traditional pattern, there are only about four seams to deal with, including an elastic casing at the waist and a creative ribbon hem. If you’d like to follow along with Liesl’s tutorial, it’s available as a Creativebug workshop. And remember, while ribbons are a fun touch, you can always opt for a simpler bias hem instead.
Next, let’s talk about the **Popover Sundress**. This A-line dress features a contrast yoke and bias ties at the shoulders, and it’s available in sizes 2-8. There’s also a version tailored for an 18-inch doll. Sewing this dress will help you master the art of bias binding—a fantastic skill to develop for future projects. What makes this pattern particularly appealing is that it’s entirely reversible, and the best part? It’s a free download! If you’re interested in following along with Liesl, it’s available as a Creativebug workshop.
Moving on, we have the **Seashore Bloomers**, which are quick and easy to make. These bloomers come in sizes 6M-4 and are ideal for sewing for very young girls. As a Singles pattern, it’s digital-only and much more affordable than full patterns.
Another delightful option is the **Music Box Jumper**, which is an empire-waist dress that was actually my first Oliver + S project. It’s available in sizes 6M-12 and teaches essential skills such as buttonholes, plackets, and pleats.
For something playful yet practical, consider the **Hula Hoop Skirt**, a reversible elastic waistband skirt that’s both fun and functional. It comes in sizes 6M-12 and is another Singles pattern, meaning it’s digital-only and budget-friendly. This project is a great way to practice sewing reversible garments.
Next, the **Seashore Sundress** offers an easy-to-sew option available in sizes 6M-12. It helps develop skills like buttonholes and adding front hip pockets.
Then there’s the **Sailboat Skirt**, an A-line skirt with a button front closure and elastic back. It’s available in sizes 6M-8 and teaches valuable techniques such as buttonholes, creating a kick pleat, and setting in pockets.
Lastly, the **Tea Party Sundress** is a sweet sundress available in sizes 0-5. It introduces skills like buttonholes, curved seams, flat piping, and hem facings.
So, what was your first Oliver + S pattern? Stay tuned for the next installment in our series, where we’ll explore beginner-friendly patterns for boys!
