Xie Zhenhua, the deputy director of China's National Development and Reform Commission, and Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Naoshima, both highlighted on the 8th that cooperation between China and Japan in energy conservation and environmental protection has been growing rapidly, becoming a new highlight in their economic and trade relations.
Speaking at the opening session of the 4th China-Japan Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Comprehensive Forum, Xie emphasized that energy efficiency, environmental protection, and climate change are now top priorities globally. Especially after the global financial crisis, many countries have turned to energy-saving measures, green industries, and renewable energy as tools to overcome economic challenges and drive growth. He pointed out that aligning with global trends in economic development and industrial upgrades, accelerating the growth of energy-efficient and environmentally friendly industries is more crucial than ever for sustainable development.
Xie also noted that Japan has accumulated extensive technological expertise and successful experiences in tackling energy and environmental issues, while China has built a significant scale in the energy-saving and environmental protection sector. With complementary strengths, the two countries can further develop a green economy centered around these industries, creating more opportunities for collaboration between governments and businesses.
Chen Jian, Vice Minister of China's Ministry of Commerce, added that enhancing Sino-Japanese cooperation in this area not only fosters new industries and demand but also sends a positive message to the international community, setting an example for other regional nations.
To deepen cooperation, Xie suggested that both governments should improve policy frameworks, especially by strengthening incentives for technology trade and innovation, and create a favorable business environment for enterprises. He also called for better communication on policy formulation and implementation, as well as exploring financial support mechanisms to promote joint efforts in energy conservation and environmental protection.
Naoshima expressed that over 1,000 participants from various sectors attended the forum, reflecting the strong interest and expectations of both countries in this field. Japan is eager to strengthen bilateral ties in economy, energy, and environment, and is willing to share its advanced technologies and experiences to help China address common challenges like climate change.
During the event, China and Japan signed 42 energy conservation and environmental protection projects. Discussions covered key areas such as the front-runner policy, circular economy, seawater desalination, water treatment, automotive industry, power generation, coal, chemicals, and long-term trade cooperation.
The forum, organized by China’s National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Commerce, and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, aims to deepen cooperation in energy, environment, and industrial development. Since its first meeting in 2006, the previous three forums led to 34 signed projects, with over 300 Chinese participants attending training programs in Japan.
