Xie Zhenhua, the vice director of the National Development and Reform Commission, and Japan's Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Naoshima, emphasized on the 8th that Sino-Japanese cooperation in energy conservation and environmental protection has seen rapid development, becoming a new highlight in economic and trade relations between the two countries.
During his keynote speech at the 4th China-Japan Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Comprehensive Forum, Xie highlighted that energy efficiency, environmental protection, and climate change have become central issues for the international community. Especially after the global financial crisis, many nations have turned to energy-saving initiatives, green industries, and renewable energy as tools to overcome economic challenges and drive sustainable growth. Aligning with global trends, he stressed the urgency of accelerating the development of energy-saving and environmental protection sectors to enhance long-term sustainability.
He noted that Japan has accumulated extensive experience and advanced technologies in addressing energy and environmental challenges, while China has established a growing industrial base in this field. By combining their strengths and focusing on green economies, both countries can unlock new opportunities for collaboration, benefiting not only their governments but also businesses.
Chen Jian, Vice Minister of Commerce, added that enhancing cooperation in energy conservation and environmental protection would not only boost emerging industries and create new market demands but also set a positive example for other countries in the region. This partnership could serve as a model for regional environmental and economic cooperation.
To further strengthen this collaboration, Xie suggested that both governments improve policy frameworks, especially by refining incentives for technology trade, innovation, and joint research. Creating a favorable business environment and facilitating policy exchanges would help enterprises engage more effectively. Additionally, exploring financial support mechanisms and promoting innovative business models would be key to advancing bilateral efforts in energy and environmental protection.
Naoshima expressed Japan’s strong interest in deepening economic, energy, and environmental ties with China. He highlighted that Japan is eager to share its advanced energy-saving technologies and experiences to support China’s development. Both nations are committed to working together to tackle climate change and contribute to global environmental goals.
During the forum, China and Japan signed 42 energy conservation and environmental protection projects. Discussions covered topics such as the front-runner policy, circular economy, seawater desalination, water treatment, automotive industry, power generation, coal, chemicals, and long-term trade cooperation.
The China-Japan Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Comprehensive Forum is organized by the Chinese National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Commerce, and Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Its goal is to deepen cooperation in energy efficiency, environmental protection, and industrial development. Since its inception in 2006, the forum has facilitated 34 cooperation projects, with over 300 Chinese participants attending training programs in Japan.
