Welcome back, Shelley! It’s always a treat to have you here sharing your creative projects. This time around, you’re back with yet another fantastic idea using the beloved Nature Walk Pants pattern from Oliver + S. We’re so grateful to have you on the blog today! ---

Hi everyone! Today I’m thrilled to be returning to share another fun sewing adventure—this time turning the Nature Walk Pants into disco-inspired flares. I’ve been asked to do this guest post, and while I’m honored, I have to admit I initially felt like I was doing things “the wrong way.” But hey, sometimes the best results come from experimenting, especially when it’s for something like a last-minute costume for a disco party. So, let’s dive in!

Oliver + S Nature Walk Pants transformed into disco flares

Hello again, everyone! First off, thank you so much for having me back. As I mentioned, I was super excited about this project but also a little nervous. You see, Liesl recently shared her tips on avoiding common mistakes, like the infamous A-line alteration blunders. I took it a step further, though—I completely ignored the outer leg seams and focused solely on adding flare to the inner leg. Honestly, it wasn’t exactly textbook sewing—but isn’t that half the fun?

For those of you who sew couture styles—or maybe just enjoy a good laugh at my expense—it would be great if you could chime in with your thoughts. Did I overcomplicate things? Or could I have done it better? Let me know in the comments below!

Adding flair to the Oliver + S Nature Walk Pants

Now, onto the fun part! The starting point for this project was, of course, the Nature Walk Pants pattern. Since I knew I wanted a snug fit around the backside, I sized down slightly and extended the length. Next came the real challenge: creating flares that actually looked intentional. To achieve this, I widened the hem on both sides and connected it to the side seam with a gentle curve. Keep in mind that all that extra width ends up in the inner leg, so take it easy on the scissors!

Modifying the Nature Walk Pants

For the outer leg, I decided to get a bit creative. Instead of redrawing the entire pattern, I simply slashed and spread the existing piece directly onto the fabric. This gave me a subtle pleat in the lower leg, adding just the right amount of flair without going overboard. If you’re looking for a more dramatic effect, though, you could always split the pattern vertically and sew a side seam to give the outer leg more room.

As you might guess, I was feeling a little lazy with this project, so I skipped the precise drafting process and just eyeballed it. Hey, sometimes imperfection is part of the charm!

Adding outer leg flare to the pants

Now, let’s talk about the finishing touch—painting! I wanted these pants to stand out, so I got out some craft foam and started stamping. Stars seemed like the perfect motif, and they were surprisingly easy to make. Just cut out shapes from the foam, apply fabric paint with a brush, and voilà! Of course, you don’t need fancy tools—you could use a kitchen sponge, an eraser, or even a potato. The key is to have fun with it.

Stamping stars onto the fabric

For those of you with kids, stamping is a great way to involve them in the creative process. Plus, it’s a heck of a lot faster than stenciling! And trust me, they’ll love helping out. In the end, I ended up with a pair of disco pants that were equal parts funky and functional.

And there you have it—a pair of custom-made disco pants that anyone would be proud to wear. If you look closely, you’ll notice a subtle scale change. That’s right—these weren’t made for an adult—they’re actually miniaturized versions for Tinkerbell! Talk about taking creativity to the next level.

Thank you again, Rachel, for inviting me back. Sewing has always been such a joy for me, and I’ve learned so much from the amazing community surrounding Oliver + S. When I encounter a tricky project, I often turn to this blog for inspiration. But when deadlines are tight or the goal is just to have fun, I embrace experimentation—and that’s where the real magic happens!
