Welcome back, Shelley! We’re thrilled to have you back on the blog today, sharing yet another creative project with us. As many of you may recall, Shelley has graced our pages before with her delightful posts about her favorite Oliver + S patterns and her incredible Evel Knievel costume. This time around, she’s turning her attention to the Nature Walk Pants, giving them a fabulous disco twist. Thank you so much for joining us again, Shelley!

Hello everyone! I’m so excited to be here again, especially since I got to work on such a fun project. To be honest, though, I initially felt a little self-conscious about diving into this costume creation. I mean, I definitely didn’t follow the “rules,†but maybe that’s okay—after all, this was meant to be a quick, last-minute outfit for a disco party.
If you’re familiar with Liesl’s tutorials, you might remember her hilarious post about how NOT to do an A-line alteration. Well, I took that idea to the extreme with these flared pants. Instead of creating a balanced flare, I ended up concentrating all the flare in the inner leg. Oops! But hey, the star stamping turned out super cool, don’t you think?
For this project, there was only one pattern choice that made sense: the Nature Walk Pullover and Pants. It’s one of my absolute favorites. Here’s how I approached the transformation:
---
### Step 1: Start with the Right Size
I began with the Nature Walk pattern piece, sizing down slightly and adding extra length to ensure a snug fit around the hips and butt. That’s key for creating those iconic disco vibes!
Next, I widened the hemline on both sides. Remember, all that extra width will end up in the inner leg, so take it easy—you don’t want to overdo it. Once you’ve widened the hem, draw a line connecting the new hem point to the side seam notch.
---
### Step 2: Add Flare to the Outer Leg
To get some flare on the outer leg, I tried cutting and spreading the pattern. Alternatively, you could split the pattern vertically and sew a side seam to create more pronounced outer flare.
But let’s be honest—I was feeling lazy and rushed, so I skipped redrawing the pattern entirely. Instead, I simply slashed the pattern piece and spread it directly onto the fabric. This created a small pleat of fabric along the outer leg, which gave the pants a unique flair without requiring too much effort.
---
### Step 3: Get Creative with Fabric Paint
Now came the fun part: decorating the pants with gold stars! I used craft foam to create stamps, but you could also use a kitchen sponge, eraser, or even a potato. The possibilities are endless.
To apply the paint, I brushed it onto the stamp and pressed it onto the fabric. The results weren’t perfectly symmetrical stars, but they had character—and best of all, they were quick and easy to make. Plus, my kids loved helping out with the stamping!

### Final Touches
After all that work, I ended up with some seriously groovy disco pants featuring stamped gold stars. And yes, I did notice the scale difference in the photos—no giant scissors or monster clothes pegs involved here! Just good old-fashioned creativity.
Thank you so much for having me back, Rachel. Working with Oliver + S patterns has been such a joy, and I always learn something new whenever I dive into their designs. When faced with a last-minute project like this, I love experimenting and seeing where my imagination takes me. It’s always a blast!
